From Titan to the net and back around

27925687_p0The wheel keeps spinning when it comes to Japan’s anime industry- the only industry it seems that continues to make giant robot anime religiously.  A freind was watching a Netflix funded giant robot anime the other night, and invited me to come join him. I generally trust his judgment when it comes to shows and he told me it was at least better then he expected (which is good news). But we are both tired and relatively jaded by anime, the best mecha shows having been long past (aka Gunbuster, Eva, Macross plus ect). And Even now I don’t think his stellar review of this show is enough to influence me on my own to go see it, but we’ll see.  Years ago, my opinions would have been way different though.  How did I get to this point? How did a person who has loved and drawn mecha porn and comics for 16 years suddenly up and quit?

I think I have arrived at part of the answer.

Just to set things straight, I will always love Giant robots and Giant robot love making, That much has not changed. I didn’t stop liking Melan the Blue, or Xenogear, or Daizengar,  just because I stopped drawing them. I stopped drawing mecha because I basically just stopped liking mech anime and the well ran dry.  One way to understand this phenomenon is that I am about 10-15 years older then the median age group focus for the current generation of anime shows. This means that I have seen 10-15 more years of anime plots then the current person who is still knee deep in their enjoyment of the media. It will take these people at least 10 more years to reach the point of  fatigue that I have.  10 years of the same recycled anime plots about moe high school girls, and emotionally unstable pubescent teenage boys with parental issues.  10 years of forced love stories in alien settings with monster-of-the-week villains. 10 more years of high school level freedom fighters/terrorists trying to “fix the system” that adults fucked up, and 10 years of  “gotta catch em all” Pokemon clones.

I am Tired of shows where the machines, the huge selling point of these anime shows, take a back seat to the human drama at hand.

“Remember, sentient robots are for kids unless they have huge tits and look like jail bait .”~ Japan

The above statement I feel holds true to this day. With anime’s official compromise to be shows like Casshern Sins, and kikaider, where the “male robot”  (or female) in this case looks dead to real like a  human for the entirety of the show. Other shows like Strike witches and Kantai collection/Kancolle feature the “Girl” as a mecha musume who is supposed to represent an airplane or warship…But never an actual non gynoid-esque machine. These shows are not bad just because they don’t follow my ideal taste, but I am resolved in the notion that Japan will never ever make the machine show I desperately want to see.

Where am I going with all this? Well I thought Id just try to address some of the occasional butthurt I find on the web from people who harshly critique me for switching to Sentient Military vehicles over humanoid robots. I shouldn’t even be responding to this shit, but I cant help but take the bait.

As Ive said before, Switching to sentient vehicles was due to various external factors like the one explained above. It may include the fact that tanks and jets are real enough to be touched, it may have something to do with a small influence by Pixar, WarThunder, or maybe it was the PL-01 stealth tank.  But I do not see the difference between a sentient military vehicle and a Gundam porn wise other then the fact that one walks on two legs and the other does not. If a couple of peeps can’t understand why an artist would choose to put their efforts into making the rare crazy  stuff that makes them happy, then they had better pick up a pencil and get to work on their own damn shit.

The way I see it, I put in the effort. So Ive earned the right to “Marry sue” my men and women into oblivion with googly-eyed jets and tanks.

I just stumbled on this and was reading everything after looking at a ton of art, once i saw you had a patreon page i signed up and i could not be happier, I’m only hoping i can offer a bit more as soon as i can. You have just become my number one favorite artist of all time, you have drawn something that even as a young child i always adored, Living machines. I love robots and the like, but they where never the same, I grew up on a farm and the things i would imagine about the tractors and combines and whatnot, i always have loved thinking they where real and could be like people yet not, Seeing your art brought me back to those times and now with a more adult twist which was such a thrill!. Not everyone will support your art nor visions because not mainstream, nor what they like, but you draw what you like. Those of us that think more as you do will adore it and you’ll attract more people that are into this and lose all the ones that do not. Hopefully when you do get some nasty comments you think of the support alot of us have for you! I never want you to stop drawing, every comic that comes out is a thrill, i never want it to end, i want it to go on and on with side stories and other chars if you decide to end the main ones, i wanna see everything you envision and be surprised, which i have been, the tanks, planes, and the one truck i saw.. i adored every single one! I love the adult side and more then anything i love the way each artwork has such feeling put into it, the charaters truly seem to care for each other, the passion seems so real! *happy sigh* You keep on drawing, and like the poster above me said.. Baby morphs! Oh yes please! gimme! and parents with *nods*

Baby morphs like Moon? OH YES PLEASE <3 though i'm not too interested in planes or morphs, Moon is the most adorable thing i've seen in a long time. 🙂

I guess a car morph would be quite hard to draw, because of their boxy shape. :/

Yeah that’s it, only picture a storm around its body with red lighting bolts and that’s a fully upgraded Cybran ACU. Well that’s actually a mod, and a good looking one at that, and the original isn’t that symmetrical but you get the point. I am into some mechs, but they’re like the Titanfall mechs (Atlas is my favorite) or ones that look real mechanical like the Halo 4 Mantis or.., well one childhood memory is an old game called Robotech Battlecry, I loved the sifferent playing modes and I’ll settle to bang one of them. Overall I like the very mechanical looking ones, idk why but I like them better.

Oh mah gawd more baby morphs SQWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
But yea, I ain’t rushin you on the comics, do what you need to do. I kinda like people without set schedules, because I get a moment of happiness when i see something new come out, rather than sadness at a missed day. The comic looks cool so far, and I don’t think anyone here is expecting/demanding the greatest story ever. So you know, when i first got here i think the first thing i saw was the bomber and 3 girls, so i am well aware what is here. Yea I am a military fan, from big guns and armored vehicles to modern shooters. (Battlefield). I like your art and VKA’s art, dont get me wrong. I try to avoid comparing artists, because every draws differently. He goes for a realistic 3D look, and you draw in black and white with perfection. Unless you draw exactly the same, with the same programs and tools, its impossible to compare two artists.

Hey, you don’t disappoint me at all! I *do* like what you’re doing now, don’t get me wrong on that point. One of the things I like about following an artist for a long period of time is watching their art and style and interests change over time. To me that is a plus, not something to whinge about. Sadly I can’t draw worth a crap. Or at least, nothing near what you and many others can do. I’ve never tried drawing mechs or machines – I don’t have much skill with perspective.

When I manage to drag my ass back out of minimum wage bullshit and can afford my own bills, I’d like to support your Patreon. Another reason I like wonderfully creative art like yours – it makes a nice escape from IRL bull. The world of Atoll and Dire Machines is fascinating.

Shit, I can’t get the ACU outta my head.., it’s a mecha (kinda) in Supreme Commander 2 and that Cybran ACU.., I sorta understand. I’ve never seen mecha shows (that are probably a big factor in your tastes) but this one kicks ass. Wow with her I can actually use the phrase “spread dem legs” and actually mean it.., hmm I wonder what mecha stuff I’ve been missing. Look up on google images ‘supreme commander 2 Cybran acu maxed out’ and tell me what you think, mecha lovers.

Hi Ratbat,

I’m glad you’re still around. Just want to say I’m’ a long time. How long? A LOOOOONG time ago I met you at an Otakon, have your “Happy Thanksgiving 2006” picture, and another time you lost your files plus asked /v/ had any, and I shared two zips of my collection. And as a long time fan all I gotta say is, I don’t care what you draw as long as you still draw porn with sexy women in it. Thank you for all the wonderful drawings, they’re kickass as they always were.

You have the right to create what you want, not what other people want to consume. I personally prefer humanoid bots and found your art back when you were drawing some TF’s. But just because that’s my personal preference doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate other kinks. I may never be as into sentient machine porn as others but I like reading your stories and seeing your art because it presents me with something different that I would never have personally thought of. It adds to my own internal fantasy world, even if its not my mainstream kink. Then again I’ve never been one of those assholes who think they are entitled to an artists’ work and whinge about any changes they make as if they’re your damn boss.

I also dislike the anti-mary sue attitudes. The term originated as a derogatory response to women-generated fan characters. Are there shitty written characters out there? Sure! But a shit character is a shit character and merely being a ‘self insert’ doesn’t automatically make for a shit character. The label of Mary Sue functions as a insult designed to police female fans and specifically their expressions of sexuality within a fandom. And other female fans are often the worst sort of enforcers of that shit, especially in fandoms where slash becomes the default fan expression form.

So fuck the haters. No-one should have to justify or defend what they do or don’t like. Fandom is supposed to be about enjoyment and exploration, not the fucking Spanish Inquisition.

Oh hi Rat, I’m up in NJ. I don’t entirely remember how i found this site, i think i found your DA while looking at vonkickass’ stuff and that led me here. Into mecha and vehicles- I might be now, thanks to this site. I always like the random stuff, and i do like robots and mechs that don’t look human. Stuff that looks more mechanical than human, but not animatronic or steampunk. I love the way you draw vehicles and morphs, especially the baby morphs that deserve a squee. I am following your comic too, which looks awesome.

Random fan here- Eh, screw em. Whenever an artist changes what they like, 3 things happen. 1- Some people leave because they don’t see what they want to see. 2- New people join in when they see stuff they like. 3- Friends and fans stick around because they like seeing what you draw, no matter what. Besides, you still like those old shows, right? You’ll forever like them, but you are just annoyed by the new stuff that comes out as copies (Welcome to modern television). Its like a ride, you’re driving, and we’re sitting in the backseat enjoying the ride. If you want to make a turn someone doesn’t like, don’t let them backseat drive.

Fuck ’em. We’re mechanophilias, lovers of machines. Last I checked the stuff you draw are machines, same with the mechs, machines.
